FormatPaperback
GenreLiterary Fiction / Coming of Age
SettingBlue Water, Ontario — 1990s
Based onTrue events

One night changed his future. Blue Water tested everything that remained.

Sixteen-year-old Darnel Burrell had everything ahead of him — rare athletic talent, a football future, and people who believed in him. One night changed all of it.

Sentenced under Canada's Young Offenders Act, Darnel is sent to Blue Water — a youth detention facility on the shores of Lake Huron. Inside, the rules are different. Loyalty can save you. Hatred can destroy you. And redemption, if it comes at all, must be earned.

Before Blue Water made headlines in 1996, events were already unfolding behind those fences. Y.O.A. enters that hidden world through Darnel's story — a story of brotherhood, institutional power, survival, and what it means to grow up when the world has already decided who you are.

"Some boys are sentenced. Others are forged."
— Y.O.A.: Young Offenders Act

An Excerpt

From Chapter One — The Funeral

The first thing Darnel notices is how quiet a packed room can be. It doesn’t make sense. There are over a hundred people inside the funeral home—family, coaches, teachers, old neighbours, church people, teammates in dress shirts and borrowed ties—but the room still feels hollow. Like the sound has been scooped out of it. He stands near the front beside his mother, hands locked before him so nobody sees them shake. The dark suit on his back feels too tight across the shoulders.
